Book Club Anyone?
by Lady Echo Lucia Rainbow Bliss - Wednesday, 14 April 2010, 02:26 AM

There's a post down the list that wanted to start a pagan bookclub. There seemed to be a lot of interest in it and then it just fizzled out. Would anyone still like to participate in something like this? Sound off here so we know which way we're going with it.

Blessed Be,

Echo

I believe the reason it fizzled is because the person who said they were gonna head it up kinda forgot about the idea. :/

BTW, I'm still interested and will participate depending on the book chosen (in other words: my interest in the book and/or its availability) smile

I'm in! Yes, yes, and yes. Let's do this! Any book suggestions? I personally need to have some motivation to get started again on Starhawk's The Earth Path. It's a beautiful book so far, only read first two chapters, but life got in the way. Or should we do something light and fictiony? Whatever the choice, I'm in. :D

O_O You no likey Team Jacob?! *lol* I felt the same way...at first. But it sneaks up on you. You start to ignore the teenage, angst ridden, Romeo and Juliet, obsessive love crap and get into the Meyers mythos. But you have to let it happen, Calawyn, just let it go. Come play with us, Calawyn. O_o

Shall we vote? Everyone nominate a book (any genre?), then we can vote on them.

Natalie's nom: The Earth Path, by Starhawk (for purely selfish reasons because I already have it).

Yeah, it's a completely different book. A lot about the way our society has viewed the earth as a commodity, different theories about the way we will relate to the earth in the future (trends), and information about permaculture. All from the perspective a fabulous and brilliant witch/eco-activist. But I love her and am really intrigued about her earth training - as I still have no idea what the heck permaculture is.

Okay - if we're going with a real book (paper and all that) no offense but I'll step aside if it's gonna be Starhawk and get in on the next book read possibly. She's just not for me. smile

I'm a bit of a book-learning snob in a way. lol. I tend to steer clear of things published by Llewellyn (though there are some exceptions) along with anything vaguely 101-ish or Wiccan-based. It makes a lot of sense really when you realize #1 I'm a witch and not Wiccan (only mentioning it for the newer peeps) and #2 I've been a practitioner for many years (10+? [shrug] I haven't kept track) and #3 studied alternative religions even longer than that (that's like 25+yrs? I gave up counting after 25).

This ebook looks like it might be interesting: Animism: Or, Thought Currents of Primitive Peoples by GEORGE WILLIAM GILMORE

I can change it up to a .pdf for anyone that wants it that way (or any ebook from a site like sacred texts) for convenience sake if the need shall ever arise.

Oh, here's something! - I'm good with anything learning about fairy folk, folk magick, listening to folk music, queer as folk (j/k) - there was just a lot of "folks" there. wink Thought I'd mention something that might interest a selection of people regardless of where they are on their path. "Meeting the Other Crowd" is a book on Irish fairy lore. Any of the Katharine Briggs fairy books are supposed to be stupendous and wonderfully researched. Secret Commonwealth of Elves, Fauns and Fairies by Robert Kirk is small, cheap and looks to be interesting (or HERE in ebook form).

Amie! You seem like the person to ask! Do you know of any good books on old folk magic or Appalachian Hoodoo? If you can think of any, I'd be really appreciative! Trying to explore my own roots which would be more in the Appalachian or Cherokee vein.

I just finished another book that might interest some people here eventually! It's called Mama Lola: A Voodoo Priestess in Brooklyn by Karen McCarthy Brown. This was such an amazing book! It's an anthropological look at Voudou. The anthropologist/author eventually becomes an initiate herself. Seriously, a great book! My boyfriend actually studied it in college for some course in his Anthropology major. I happened to find it nestled in amongst his old textbooks. I was like, "Whoa! What's THIS!?" I LOVED this book. Just throwing it out there. It's something you'd definitely have to order. I've never seen in the Cultural section at any bookstore.

What kind of folk magick? British (English or Anglo-Saxon) folk magick? German folk magick? Balkans? American?

I'm guessing American since you're wanting to research more along your roots. Lemme put some feelers out & get back to you...

Okay Calawyn - here's what I came up with for great recommendations:

the Foxfire books - there's several in the series

Signs, Cures and Witchery; German Appalachian Folklore by Gerald C. Milnes

Like Amie, I am a Witch not Wiccan so anything Wicca 101-ish I wouldn't be interested in but I do like books that focus more on Green Craft so my picks would be: Ellen Dugan, Rae Beth, Ann Moura.

If we are also going to do fiction my picks would be:

Anne Bishop - Black Jewels and Tir Alaian and Nora Roberts 3 Sisters Trilogy.

I was thinking, we should ask the Powers that Be if we can have a completely different forum for the Book Club, one created especially for it. It could be listed with Artist's Corner, Fuzzy Friends and of course Book Club. Not sure who we would ask about that but it was just an idea.

That's a perfect idea Lady Nepthys! Because then other bookclubs can form based on their book choice. Each thread can be titled by book title and month to keep the discussions straight. Our thread post topic would be like "Homeland, R.A. Salvatore (May 1-31, 2010)" or "Secret Commenwealth... (May 1-31, 2010)" depending on our book choice. Is Lady Iris taking questions yet? I think she may still be on personal leave from the school, but does that count TFH too? Any members of the inner-circle (like Lady Luan) would also be good people to contact about it. Has anyone yet?

I usually bug all three when something comes up and eventually one of them will help out. ;)

I agree with y'all - we do need a separate forum. There used to be one before Lady iris separated everything to TFA and TFH and it kinda got lost in the move along with being a bit of a dead forum for a bit. However, it's hopping and certainly needs it's own place otherwise I'm afraid a budding little artist may never get their piece noticed amongst all the book chatter. smile
