Difficulties Scrying
by Katie MacConnell - Thursday, 10 June 2010, 05:49 PM

Hello everyone!

I started the scrying class here at TFA, and, having no prior experience with scrying, I'm finding it incredibly difficult. I try to complete the lessons, usually multiple times, but I can't seem to move forward. I've been working on my visualization, and it's getting better in meditation, but I can't seem to make it work for me in scrying.

Does anyone have any tips that might help a beginner move on? Shoving through like a bull isn't doing it for me, obviously. Lol.

Thanks and bright blessings,
Kit

Have you tried listening to music, something instrumental might help you focus?

I haven't, but I suppose it wouldn't hurt. I guess I equate music with distraction, so it didn't really enter my mind to give it a shot. Thanks, though, I'll definitely do some browsing for appropriate music. =]

Brianna's suggestion of music is good. I use music to set the mood for meditation, divination and ritual. You might also try meditating for several minutes to relax your body and mind before beginning to scry. The more you "force" it the harder it can be.

What are you using to scry with? Sometimes just changing out the tool can help. Not everyone is proficient with all mediums. Hope you have success!

Blessings,

Echo

I'm currently using a hematite scrying ball that was given to me by a friend, but I may switch to a bowl or flame. I have an odd aversion to mirrors. I'll definitely try meditating a bit before hand, though. It definitely can't hurt. Thank you. =]

To be fair, a scrying mirror isn't made the same as a mirror mirror. You can make one pretty easily by using a picture frame with a piece of glass that's been painted black (herbs and things can be mixed in the paint as well) so you won't see a perfect reflection. Also, I cover mien up with a black cloth as it sits on my shelf when not in use. And, to be frank, it hasn't been in use probably since the time I made it and took the class. I had troubles with it as well. I'm much better with flames than water, crystal balls or mirrors. But it usually needs to be a big flame, too - like a real fire and not just a candle flame. It's the coals underneath the flames that "speak" to me more so than the flames themselves.

Mirrors at night freak me out. I need to avert my eyes if there's ever a middle of the night bathroom run. ;)

See, that's my issue with flames, too. I tried a candle flame, but it wasn't large enough. I may try water next. I love my scrying ball, but I'm really not having any luck with it at all.

Mirrors at night are creepy. The night before last I had a nightmare that I was being watched by a man who was always in the shadows, through windows. He was inside, I was outside. And I woke up and my wall mirror (which is huge and sits right across from my bed, not the brightest move on my part) is staring right back at me. Heart attack and a half. I had to pull the covers over my head like a five year old.

Here is my suggestion: Don't think so much! Let your mind wander where it needs to go. I used to over think, and once I allowed my mind just wander, scrying became easy for me.

I scry using a flame, or water. I don't have a scrying mirror, yet. I also scry using smoke, which is quite neat.

I guess I'll have to add "Stop being a control freak" to my list. =P

Kit,

I have an immense fear of mirror, even more than just regular mirrors would be scrying mirrors, so I can definitely understand the aversion. However, I do have a couple tips for you:

The usual scale I recommend for upgrading on tools in scrying is fire/smoke, water, mirror, gazing ball. So start off small. Light a white, black, or purple tea light and gaze into the flame. The whole point of scrying is to look PAST what is there, and get information via the images you come across. Let it be a portal.

Being a control freak (also a problem I deal with) does hurt this process. But it's all about teaching yourself how to deny your own stubbornness. Get some rhythmic drum beats, some incense, and just let your mind wrap around the fire or other tool. Focus on nothing else but it, and try to feel it inside of yourself. It's kind of a mind/matter thing.

And if you don't want to start with fire, try smoke. Light a stick of incense and analyze the smoke that drifts off. It's not always as clear as scrying with a mirror or ball, but it is a great way to put your foot in the door.

I hope this helps!

Considering the class is going awful for me, I think maybe I will start off in stages. I'll worth with fire for awhile, and see if I can make any headway. I really appreciate this. I've been hoping to get into scrying for awhile now, but my focus just hates my guts. Thanks for this answer. I really didn't realize that there was an easy-->hard scale, but if fire is starting small, then fire it is. <3 Thank you.
